When I consider what is needed from leaders in organizations, an old Bonnie Tyler song about holding out for a hero comes to mind: somebody strong, and sure, and larger than life. Managers at all levels these days have a really tough assignment trying to create an environment that both achieves challenging goals and allows for human thriving.
I’ve written a lot about how leaders can develop people, and that is just one of the skills we rely on them to have. I spent the summer exploring current practices for developing leaders to be the kind of larger-than-life heroes we need. How can we effectively equip people for their leadership roles and responsibilities in an environment that is regularly impacted by transformational changes?
Good question, yes? I went looking for answers from senior practitioners currently grappling with this challenge and from recent research, benchmarking reports, and expert guidance. A full report on my findings is available now as a free download from the Learning Guild.

“There is no doubt that leader development is as critical now as it ever has been. One need only look at the challenges that leaders are confronting, the speed of change, and the shifting dynamics of the work force to discern that leaders need sharp skills and a well-honed approach to both achieve business objectives and enable productive and engaged employees.
The L&D industry has decades of experience and research on how to develop leaders, but the current environment presents unique challenges. This report wades into the challenges and techniques of leader development to provide synthesized recommendations for current leader development strategists.”
